2006

Start of 1st Central American Conflict. U.S. engages in interventionist actions in Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador. This is done to counteract anti-American regimes being promoted by Hugo Chavez.

Richard Night, formerly of the construction development company Halsey, Ferris, and Night, begins his own development company, Night International, geared towards large corporate projects. He immediately begins work on his dream of building the perfect city.

2007

European Economic Union’s space program launches Hermes space plane.

2008

U.S. dollar begins to weaken. As a result, the Eurodollar begins to become more common in international transactions. Russia begins using the Eurodollar.

The NSA begins clandestine operations in an attempt to undermine EEC economic strength and artificially bolster U.S. economic strength to prevent America from falling behind Europe for the first time in 70 years. However these measures are unsustainable.

U.S. Drug Enforcement agency experiments with artificially engineered plagues designed to target cocoa and opium plants. CIA puts it to use in Afghanistan to stop the Taliban’s primary source of income.

The first biologic interface chips are developed. Testing begins for prosthetics controlled by the wearer’s thought impulses.

Al-Qaida detonates a small tactical nuclear device in New York City on the eight-year anniversary of the World Trade Center Attack. 15,000 are killed.

Night International begins construction of Coronado City in the Del Coronado Bay region of the central California Coast. The city of Del Coronado, already in the location, was incorporated into the project as a picturesque “Old Downtown.”

2010

Pressures from the weakening dollar, over-borrowing of money by individuals and companies, the collapse of the housing market, and the aftermath of the terrorist attack in New York, prove to be too much: the stock market crashes. The American economy limps along for several months and then collapses.

A nuclear accident in Pittsburgh kills 257.

Refusing to use union contractors in Coronado City, Richard Night makes an enemy of the Mob that makes several attempts to sabotage the city project but never succeed in stopping it.

2011

The European Space Agency begins work on the Mount Kilimanjaro mass driver.

2012

The United States infrastructure begins to collapse. Unemployment, homelessness, and corruption are rampant. The U.S. government is broke and unable to deal with any of these issues. Unemployment reaches nearly 50% and homelessness 25% percent. Many people begin flocking to cities looking for work. In the rural areas, no longer able to count on municipalities, citizens begin to band together into tribe-like organizations. Many of these groups begin to migrate, looking for resources. They become known as nomad packs. The population explosion in the cities allows urban gangs to swell their ranks allowing them to begin challenging organized crime for power and influence.
The crime rate explodes. In an incident known as the Lawyer Purge, angry mobs murder over a hundred defense attorneys. On August 17th, President Obama and Vice-President Biden are assassinated in separate incidents. Speaker Pelosi has a nervous breakdown and the President Pro Tempore; Senator Byrd turns the Presidency down. Succession then falls to the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton who takes control and declares martial law.

U.S. Military begins experimenting with Smart Gun and vehicle cyber links.

U.S. forces recall all troops from Germany, Japan, South Korea, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq to deal with escalating violence at home. Many never make it home but are instead redirected to South America.

2013

With the U.S. collapsing, Iran makes its move against Israel. The conflict quickly goes nuclear. When it is all done, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Chad, Israel, and the UAE are reduced to a radioactive wasteland. Oil prices skyrocket as 40% of the world supply is no longer obtainable.

2014

Terrorist group called the Neo-Luddites establish in western Kentucky. They begin bombing airports, factories, freeways, and mass transit terminals.

Drought in Midwest parches farmlands. Only corporate backed farms are able to sustain through the disaster. Within a few years, family-owned farms are a thing of the past.

A 10.5 earthquake shatters Los Angeles. In the end, 65,000 are killed and the Pacific Ocean floods a third of the city.

Richard Night is murdered in his penthouse apartment. The Mob is believed to be behind it. As a tribute to his vision, the City Council renames Coronado City as Night City. A power struggle begins immediately.

Texas profits greatly as it is looked to more and more as a major source of oil.

2015

In response to the out of control crime rates, the Federal Weapons Statue is established that removes most restrictions on the ownership of weapons and the ability to carry them.
The main reason was that President Clinton needed to free the military from patrolling the homeland, because she needed a loyal force to contend with the rogue intelligence agencies. Crime dropped 30% percent in a year. From this point forward, the United States would be an armed society, where a heavily armed public is now commonplace.

Tired of a failing federal government telling it how to run its affairs, Texas passes the Ross Bill that says that state law overrides federal law within Texas borders. It is essentially a declaration of independence. Texas becomes the first state to be known as a Free State. Free States are technically still part of the union and have representation in the federal government, but maintain a near autonomous state government.

Tycho moon colony is established. A mass driver is constructed there for transporting goods to the orbital platforms.

2016

Massive firestorms rage over Northwestern U.S., destroying millions of acres of farmland. The devastation, combined with the midwestern droughts creates a food shortage. Genetically engineered crops go into wide usage.

With the U.S. and Europe no longer able to support the infrastructure, The Internet collapses, as does the World Wide Web.

2018

Food Crash. Mutated virus wipes out Canadian and Russian agribusiness. U.S. avoids disaster because genetically engineered crops are immune to effects.

2019

2nd Central American War begins. U.S. invades Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, and finally Venezuela. The war is costly in both money and American lives and will take seven years before the anti-American regimes are eliminated.

Old soviet states on the verge of collapse seek to re-form the Soviet Union. The new U.S.S.R. is again a socialist state, but the hard-line communists are kept out of power, and most reforms of the last 30 years remain in effect.

2020

The Internet is reestablished, now simply called The Net. Now entirely under corporate control, the existence of free content is greatly diminished, and the World Wide Web never returns.

Major medical breakthroughs include stem-cell cloning, micro-sutures, and sterilizer fields.

Gen. Newell presents to the American people proof that the CIA and the NSA were behind the deaths of Obama, Biden, and Clinton. The NSA is destroyed in a short but bloody war and the CIA is stripped of its command structure and rebuilt to serve the new government.

Nevada declares independence and becomes the fourth Free State.

Toxic waste leaks from the Hanford Nuclear Reservation and contaminates the Columbia River. The area around Hanford becomes a toxic wasteland.

2021

The cybermodem is invented, allowing direct uplink to The Net.

EBM security forces attack the Tokyo office of Kenjiri Technologies, killing 18. It is the first officially documented use of violence between competing corporations, and is called the First Corporate War.

Seven years after the death of Richard Night, the Mob becomes the ruling power in Night City. The city deteriorates into a war zone.

Connecticut State collapses and never recovers. Going forward it is run by a cooperative of city governments and corporations.

2022

2024

The reorganization of U.S. government into its current form is completed. The first free elections are held in the U.S. since 2010, although some major changes were made. The Senate now acts as the Electoral College during Presidential elections. The House of Representatives is replaced by the Regional Committee, which has representatives of the seven new U.S. Regions (Appalachia, Dixie, Great Plains, Midwest, Northeast, Pacific Northwest, and West,) and each of the Free States.

The U.S. concerned about weaponized space platforms begins deploying troops to various space platforms. The European Union cries foul but the U.S. threatens war if the EEC tries to stop them. The U.S. backs off however; when the EEC allied Tycho Base uses its mass driver to drop a rock on Colorado Springs, wiping the city off of the map.

2025

Euro-Soviet joint space mission to Mars is launched.

A terrorist group fails in an attempt to take over EEC controlled Crystal Palace. When it is discovered that the group likely had ties to U.S. military intelligence, the Tycho mass driver drops a rock near Washington D.C. as a warning.

2026

The end of the 2nd Central American Conflict results in an influx of out of work war vets returning to the U.S. Many are enhanced with cybernetics and find work as mercenaries. The age of the Solo begins.

2027

Crystal Palace is completed.

NetWatch established by U.S./EEC treaty as use of The Net to wage corporate wars begins to expand. It gives the governments some ability to police The Net.
